What we do
GREAT recognises the significant value of ethnic minority women’s participation and leadership in growing Vietnam’s economy. Strengthening and sustaining their market engagement now and into the future will depend not only on the leadership of women themselves, but also upon the capacities and willingness of other public and private sector actors to adopt more inclusive practices and behaviours.
GREAT 2 seeks to support sustained economic empowerment for large numbers of ethnic minority women in Son La and Lao Cai provinces in northwest Vietnam. To do this, the program identifies tangible opportunities for economic and social enhancement of ethnic minority women, and develops partnerships with those public, private and/or civil society actors to develop and sustain new and more inclusive ways of working.
Where we do
The GREAT Program is being implemented across all districts and cities of Lao Cai and Son La, home to diverse ethnic minority populations. Both provinces have significant potential in tourism and agriculture and the provincial government policies also support the growth of these sectors.
How we do
GREAT applies an inclusive market systems development approach to strengthening the market engagement of ethnic minority women. This approach is designed to ensure their economic reach, benefits and empowerment are not just enabled but sustained as a result of changes in market systems that are systemic or transformational. We work with those market actors across community, private sector and government who are key to enabling women’s economic participation and building system capacity, actor incentives and sustained market pathways for inclusion. Our Approach
Inclusive Market System Development
Working with market actors (beneficiaries, communities, value chain participants, private sector and government) to address barriers and create opportunities for inclusive participation of ethnic minority women throughout market system processes.
Our Goal
Women’s Economic Empowerment
Economic empowerment is more than increased income or jobs for women. It is also about women having the ability to negotiate and use social norms to their benefit, influence decision-making and occupy leadership roles, balance workloads inside and outside the home, access financial assets and services, and cope with economic shocks.
What to achieve
The expected program outcomes for GREAT 2 are:
Outcome 1
Women, particularly ethnic minority women living in Son La and Lao Cai, have improved economic benefits.
Outcome 2
Women, particularly ethnic minority women living in Son La and Lao Cai, have increased confidence and social status, including more balanced workloads and greater decision making within the home, workplace, and community.
Outcome 3
Women, particularly ethnic minority women and household members living in Son La and Lao Cai, benefit from more gender-responsive, inclusive, and effective provincial and national policies, plans, strategies, and programs.
