Lao Cai, with its stunning natural beauty and rich cultural heritage, has long captivated travelers seeking adventurous and unique experiences. The region’s diverse ethnic minority communities offer a vibrant tapestry of cultural experiences.

On May 8th, 2024, The GREAT program, in collaboration with the Lao Cai Provincial Department of Tourism, organised a workshop in Lao Cai City to share the results of a survey titled “Tourism in Lao Cai Province: A survey on tourist preferences and opportunities” conducted by GREAT in 2023.

Some of the key findings from the survey include:

  • There is a growing interest among tourists in adventure tourism, as well as tourism that combines agriculture and homestays.
  • While most visitors to Lao Cai are pleased with the accommodation options, it is suggested that the province should further improve its transportation system and booking process for a more convenient experience.
  • As one of the famous destinations in Southeast Asia, Lao Cai attracts young tourists who have a habit of planning their trips using digital tools, prefer short trips, and tend to prioritise the quality of services.
  • Improving infrastructure, boosting tourism services, ensuring environmental sustainability, and engaging the local community are essential for enhancing Lao Cai’s attractiveness and maintaining its tourism growth.
  • The number of tourists visiting Lao Cai has remained consistent, with both domestic and international visitors contributing to the province’s tourism figures. In 2022 alone, Lao Cai welcomed around 5 million tourists, most of whom were domestic.
  • Sapa continues to be the top destination in Lao Cai. Other areas, such as Lao Cai city, are gaining popularity due to their unique blend of cultural and leisure experiences.
  • Tourist demographics
    • Domestic tourists: Mainly from Hanoi and the northern region, focusing on family trips and relaxation.
    • International tourists: Attracted by the province’s cultural heritage and natural wonders. They tend to stay longer and often combine their trips with other destinations in Southeast Asia.
  • Economic contribution: Tourism has profound economic implications for Lao Cai, providing substantial employment and fostering the socioeconomic progress of ethnic minority populations.
  • The digital influence on travel: Technology has significantly impacted the way people plan their trips, with internet searches, social media, and digital platforms becoming essential tools in the travel planning process.

Suggestions derived from the survey:

  • Strengthening digital marketing efforts: With the aim of attracting more potential tourists through improved content and increased online interaction.
  • Enhancing cultural tourism by developing local cultural events and infrastructure
  • Improving transportation infrastructure: Ensuring easier access for tourists to destinations within the province, especially connecting major tourist attractions.
  • Prioritising sustainability: Focusing on the preservation of natural and cultural attractions as the foundation for the province’s long-term appeal.
